In
2001, MAP enlisted the assistance of Bernard Amadei, Professor of Engineering
from the University of Colorado and founder of Engineers
Without Borders USA. Professor Amadei traveled to Mali in June 2002
with Abdoul Doumbia to provide an engineering assessment of needs in the village. Professor
Amadeis visit to Zambougou was successful in terms of delivering valuable
information and recommendations. With his visit, we became aware of the serious
water shortage and extreme contamination of existing water. Professor Amadei was
so warmly welcomed and deeply moved by the people of Zambougou that he has committed
to assist the village for years to come.
This excursion was funded by a grant for Zambougou and a project
in Mauritania, through the CU-Outreach program through the Civil,
Environmental, and Architectural Engineering (CEAE) Department at
CU Boulder Department of Engineering. In addition, Safe Systems,
a Colorado-based company, donated a solar water pasteurization unit
for use in the village.
Future Plans Include:
- Provide a rain-catching and holding tank system to store water
during the six-month dry season. EWB is currently focused on dveloping
an appropriate technology to implement this improvement. The rain
water in the olding tanks will be used to water animals and to
irrigate vegetable gardens.
- Education about sanitation and clean water.
- Once a reliable source of water is found, create an irrigation
system for at least several of the 81 large farms to ensure a
food supply during the dry season.
- Help to create micro-business opportunities for people in the
village to earn money.
- Assist the village of Zambougou to regain their self-sufficiency,
dignity, and security.
